Choosing the Right Ghostwriter

Selecting a ghostwriter for your writing project can be a daunting task. Finding the best ghostwriter for your project will depend on what you need the writer to do; however, there are a few qualifications that every great ghostwriter will possess.

Writing Skills
Make sure your ghostwriter has a website. Make sure the website is displaying articles or samples written by the ghostwriter. While the articles might not be the style you seek, keep in mind that great ghostwriters can emulate almost any style. You are looking for solid writing skills. A lack of formal education is not a determinant of a great ghostwriter; in many cases, extensive writing experience will suffice. The best ghostwriters possess a mix of both hands-on and formal education and experience.

NOTE: Due to the nature of their work, the writer will most likely not be able to show you completed manuscripts for other clients; however, many of these writers are published authors themselves, or should be able to present you with several sample clips from their portfolio. The best ghostwriters will be proud to showcase their work and will have samples readily available on their Web site.

Style
A great ghostwriter does not have a style; a great ghostwriter can emulate any style. In other words, your ghostwriter should be able to write in a variety of different styles in order to select one that will be best suited to your project. Viewing sample clips from the writer will give you a better idea of their capabilities and style. If your ghostwriter is a published author, read their work first to get a feel for their personal style. Again, the best ghostwriters can adapt their writing to any style, but the writer’s published work will allow you see what the writer is capable of.

Research Abilities
Research is a vital part of almost any writing project. If your writing project is technical, historical, or relies heavily on the research of others, the ghostwriter’s research abilities will be of utmost importance. Because you are credited as the author of the work, you will also be held responsible for any inaccurate or incorrect information within the project. Fiction works, opinion pieces, and original ideas have more leeway, but accuracy and up-to-date information is still important if you want your book to be a credible resource for readers.

The writer may have little knowledge about your specific topic, so the majority of their content will be derived from research and the materials you provide. The ghostwriter will use the Internet, books, magazine and journal articles, and in many cases, interviews with you and other experts in the field to learn about the subject matter. A great ghostwriter will be able to quickly learn about your topic and transmit the information in a manner that will captivate and hold your audience’s minds. Attention to detail is of utmost importance, especially when you consider the large volume of research materials the writer will be utilizing.

If you have already delved into the research aspect of your writing project, your writer must be able to interpret your work to continue on the research on their own. You will need to provide clear, detailed information about your expectations for the book or project’s content so that the writer will be able to research and present content that best suits your needs.

Communication Clarity
Because the ghostwriter will often be relying on your directives to formulate the project, it is essential that the lines of communications are clear between you and the writer. The best ghostwriters are great listeners; they will be able to easily identify and understand your needs and expectations for the project. As such, exceptional listening skills are a characteristic of a great ghostwriter.

If your communication style is incompatible with that of the ghostwriter, the project is most likely going to face many unnecessary obstacles and require multiple rewrites. For instance, if you lean toward written communication and prefer to correspond with the writer via e-mail and the exchange of printed materials, you may want to avoid working with a writer who works best with verbal communication such as phone calls and in-person meetings. A great ghostwriter should be able to adapt their preferred mode of communication to you, the client.

Deadline Oriented
Although quality of work is of utmost importance, the timeliness of the submitted work is a close second. After all, if the project is not complete in time for publishing, the quality of the work becomes meaningless. As the client, you should be able to work with the writer to set established deadlines for individual milestones in the project as well as the date for the completion of the manuscript. The best ghostwriters are known not only for the quality of their writing, but also for their respect for deadlines. Your ghostwriter should meet all established deadlines, and respond to phone and e-mail correspondence promptly. Unlike the quality of the ghostwriter’s work, which you can verify through portfolio clips and samples, you cannot check his or her timeliness track record. Ask the ghostwriter for the names of references and former clients who would be willing to discuss the writer’s timeliness on past projects.

Discretion
If you intend to publish your project under your own name without crediting the ghostwriter as an editor or collaborator, discretion is of utmost importance. Similarly, you may need to share confidential trade secrets or other private information with the ghostwriter in order to produce the work. The best ghostwriters are tactful, discrete, and trustworthy and will maintain your confidentiality or nondisclosure agreement at all times.

If you want your writer to be a great ghostwriter, verify that they possess the required characteristics so that you can guarantee a finished project you will be happy to share with others as your own.

Ghostwriters are often hired to work on large projects. Novels and screenplays are popular requests. Small projects have value for writers, as well. In fact, many writers make their living ghostwriting articles for authors to submit to magazines and websites for publication.

Could this be true? Are the articles I read in magazines written by someone other than the person whose name is printed? Yes! Of course, the major journalists who write for magazines like Newsweek and Time are producing their own content. Their careers depend on their ability to write. But smaller publications, especially those who cater to a very specific groups of readers, often include ghostwritten articles. Small budgets mean niche magazines can’t afford to maintain a staff of writers. Editors compensate by using material submitted by freelance writers and readers of the magazine.

Some writers have learned to capitalize on writing for a niche. For example, publications about very specific hobbies like hiking, dog training, and pacific coast cuisine, are always willing to accept articles for consideration. Writers receive a small award for the work, and the magazines get cheap, quality content. This is a win-win situation. As a result, many overworked writers, or beginners, are turning to ghostwriters to help write niche-specific articles for publication.

What does this have to do with your e-book?
If you’ve already hired a ghostwriter to create your e-book, consider adding to the project. Your e-book might appeal to a very specific crowd. If you can identify a magazine that targets that crowd, a professional writer can help restructure portions of your e-book into article format. Include a link back to your site where the book is sold.

Getting started is easy. A quick Internet search will help you create a list of publications that:

a) relate to the topic of your e-book

b) accept submissions from writers

Then talk to your ghostwriter about how the chapters or sections of your e-book can be adapted to fit the structure of a magazine article. This change requires very little rewording and reformatting, so any ghostwriter should have no problem.

If you don’t already have an e-book, think of some topics that interest you and hire a ghostwriter to write brief articles for you. There are magazines that cater to every reader, from horse owners to cactus growers. Because your writer has experience as a freelance writer, he or she might actually have some suggestions. Ghostwriters will also be able to draft query letters, which must be attached when submitting articles to an editor.

So often in business, we are told to think big. But in the case of ghostwriting, thinking small can be just as effective.

Ghostwriters can format Ebooks in an almost endless number of ways, based upon the software available.

Microsoft Word Files
Writing Ebooks using the Microsoft Word programs affords the ghostwriter the opportunity to create chapter headings, table of contents, and indexes easily and efficiently. The Ebooks can be accessed via the Web, but read on any Microsoft Word software. Ghostwriters can easily edit what is written, and readers can easily print from their personal computers. Security is low.

HTML Files
Ebooks can be opened via a browser like Microsoft Internet Explorer. However, the pages of the Ebook are actually Web pages, which must be set up by a computer programmer. Once the ghostwriter has written and saved his/her work as a text file, the pages of the book can then be encrypted in the hypertext markup language for the Internet.

PDF Files
Ghostwriters can purchase this Portable Document software from Adobe systems, and the Ebook is recognized as a .pdf file on computers that install this software. All PDF Ebooks are accessible from the Web, after doing a keyword search in one of the search engines. With this format, you can have text as well as graphic images. The reader softare to view .pdf files is free and security lock down for files is available.

Libris
Once ghostwriters are finished writing Ebooks in a text document, computer programmers can transfer the text into the Java computer programming language. Then the Java software will be converted to Libris, allowing the readers to access to the book on portable devices like small screens like cell phones with Internet capability.

Flip Ebooks
After ghostwriters spend a great deal of time writing Ebooks, they may want to recreate the experience of turning the pages of a book or magazine for their readers? Interaxive Media created software that can be written and viewed from a web server like Microsoft Internet Explorer and does not require any installation on a ghostwriter’s personal computer.

DNL Format
This is an attractive yet simple reader format to view digital books. Digital Web Books can be produced by using specific software. Vewing the digital web book in the DNL format is a safe viewing experience. File sizes are reduced for easy downloads.

yBook
This eBook reader will load text files and web pages directly from an Internet address. Then the reader creates an on screen paperback effect. This software includes a printing option that will create booklets good enough for binding. There are paper simulated backgrounds and yBook will read HTML files, text files, RTF files and PDB/PRC files (Palm document format).

ICE Book Reader
ICE Book Reader Professional is an interesting e-book reader. This one is first alternative e-book reader which includes native support for .LIT and .CHM files, and which does not utilize any Microsoft Reader or Microsoft HELP components. ICE Book Reader Professional is also a file converter: TXT-HTML, HTML-TXT, TXT-DOC, DOC-TXT, PDB-TXT, LIT-TXT, FB2-TXT etc. with codepage conversion.

ICE Book Reader Professional has several options for easy viewing whcih include ultra smooth text scrolling, full text anti-aliasing, wave scrolling and color text and heading options. ICE Book Reader enlarges text so that books can be read several feet form the screen. You can create video books in AVI format with ICE Reader.

OS requirements for ICE Book Reader Professional:
OS: Win95/98/98SE/Me/2000/NT/XP

Your eBook could make ten times as much with this secret. While selling your eBook is very profitable as you have no paper, ink, distribution, and printing costs, getting your eBook to sell other products for you is how you skyrocket the income. Your book will need to offer your readers valuable information and resources.

You can become an “affiliate” for some of these resources just like I do.

This means you find resources or products that offer additional value to your readers and include links to them in your books. Some of the links are websites where your readers find more great information. Some of the links are to products or services for sale related to your topic. These are companies and websites that pay you when you direct a buyer to them. These are the ones you want to become an affiliate (salesperson) for. In this case, your book will be the salesperson!

Your affiliate links will be worked into the text of your eBook by your ghostwriter.

The affiliate products you recommend should be relevant and if possible reviewed by you first.
Do not make your book affiliFAT. This means so many affiliate products are in the book your eBook becomes a big advertisement instead of offering valuable information to your readers.

Here are some major affiliate sites you can join for FREE and start now researching books and products that your eBook can sell for you:

ClickBank – Rated #1
Commission Junction
Performics
Shareasale
linkshare

For more information about affiliate injected ghostwriting please click on request a quote at the top of any page and place yourquestion in the comments section.

You want to create a product for a niche market. A niche market is about selling an eBook to people looking for something on a particular subject. A niche market will be less competitive as far as titles on amazon.com and on the Internet overall. Internet marketing is about keywords, searches, and competition.

Now check the number of people on the Internet looking for your eBook subject and record the results in the subject section of your Millionaire file.
Go to these two websites: Google Keyword Tool and Wordtracker.
Searches are FREE.

For instance when I searched “organic gardening” here is my results:

Wordtracker showed 1174 searches for the previous month.
Google showed 321 searches
Google also gave me numerous associated word phrases.
Two of the more searched terms:
Organic gardens 4,230 searches
Organic growing 6,621 searches

So people were looking for information on my subject and with different terms.

If more than 250 people search for your terms or keyword and there are other keyword phrases suggested with more searches (preferably between 500 and 10,000) your subject passes the search desirability test. If your subject is not desirable, pick another one and try the tests again until you find a great subject.

The number one US exported product accounts for more money than all other exports combined.
The number one United States export brings in more revenue than all other exports combined. Information is the number one export in the United States. This includes music, movies, books, software, digital products, etc. What if you had an original product people wanted and no one else on earth has? You could set your price and corner the market. That is exactly what you can do with a good eBook. You can pick a subject you know something about and write an eBook. An eBook can be as small as 25 pages. You can change what’s in your eBook anytime, even after you make sales.

You can become an author even if you can’t write a word!

You want to create a product for a niche market. A niche market is about selling an eBook to people looking for something on a particular subject. A niche market will be less competitive and Internet marketing is about keywords, searches, and competition. You want a subject enough people are interested in so you will sell eBooks, though not so overwhelming your book will be lost in a sea of competitive books.

If you have some ideas for subjects for your book go to amazon.com and browse the books in your subject category and record how many books are in the category. At the time of this writing there are about 120 books on organic gardening on Amazon. That’s a good number. “Business” for example has over 3,300 titles – that is allot to compete with.

If you do not know what you want your eBook to be about look at the books in the categories on amazon.com I suggest starting with a non-fiction how to type book.

Pick three of the bestselling books in any of those categories and order them right away.
After you have reviewed them, you will send them to your ghostwriter for researh (NOT plagiarism.)

Tell your ghostwriter you want a comparable book and make sure your agreement states that you will own the copyright and the project was a “work for hire.” Add anything you like in the book and put your name on the book – you are the author!

Get in on the biggest export in the US now – and don’t forget there is a huge market in the US as well.

“Can I hire someone to write my book?” Clients who are unfamiliar with the concept of ghostwriting are often shocked to learn that many best-selling authors and freelance writers are “writers-for-hire,” who are paid to complete writing projects that will be credited to another author. However, another popular question I hear is, “Can I hire someone to write my book using only my idea?”

Ghostwriters can be involved with writing projects on a variety of levels. The extent of the ghostwriter’s involvement depends on your preference. You may use a ghostwriter to review, edit, and polish a rough draft or manuscript, or you may collaborate with a freelance writer from start to finish on a project. In a collaborative effort, the writer relies on your concepts and stories, and then fleshes out the material using his or her own extensive research.

Of course, you can also hire a ghostwriter to write your book in its entirety – using only your idea. You simply outline directives for the ghostwriter to follow regarding general content requirements, volume, and the targeted audience and then give the ghostwriter the freedom to run with your idea. Your involvement in this type of ghostwriting is often minimal, meaning that you have to provide the writer with very few resources. Obviously, crystal clear communication between you and the writer is essential; otherwise you may end up with a project that looks nothing like what you originally envisioned. In this type of ghostwriting, the writer will often submit chapters or sections of the book to you as they write so that you can ensure the content of the book is up to your standards and headed in the right direction.

Ghostwriters may charge more for this type of service; however, the rates will depend largely on the learning curve of the material. For instance, if your idea involves brain surgery or civil engineering, complex fields of study that require years of formal education, minimal involvement on your part will drive up the price. However, if your idea is creative and original yet simple to grasp, the difference in rates might be more subtle.

So the answer to “can I hire someone to write my book using only my idea?” is yes; however, communication between you and the freelance writer is essential to ensuring that the finished product is on par with your expectations.
